For 2018, we are adding a new dimension to the program

by using visual arts to enhance the experience.

This year's theme is "Alone Together".

“Alone Together: By almost any measure, the ease and

speed with which we communicate has never been greater.

Yet the distance between nations, among communities,

and in individual relationships only seems to widen.

Alone Together explores the struggle to build meaningful connection in a world that has never been more connected.”

The above information is extracted from the fall program information for our headline act, Cantus. We were intrigued by this theme and decided to collaborate with local professional and student artists to present a visual art experience based on this theme. “Alone Together” will explore through a variety of media the ideas related to loneliness, social isolation and meaningful connections. We are grateful to art teacher Alexis Zaccariello, artist Greg Wimmer, and Courtney Lawson from SE MN NAMI for working with the students to explore this theme through art. Check back here in the upcoming weeks as we will post pictures of the works-in-progress. The art will be on display in the auditorium during the concerts and will be moved to other locations around Rochester following the festival.

Enjoy the following poems, which inspired two of the songs that will be performed at the concert.

We Two Boys Together Clinging (by Walt Whitman 1819-1892)
We two boys together clinging,
One the other never leaving,
Up and down the roads going—North and South excursions making,
Power enjoying—elbows stretching—fingers clutching,
Arm’d and fearless—eating, drinking, sleeping, loving,
No law less than ourselves owning—sailing, soldiering, thieving, threatening,
Misers, menials, priests alarming—air breathing, water drinking, on the turf or the sea-beach dancing,
Cities wrenching, ease scorning, statutes mocking, feebleness chasing,
Fulfilling our foray.

manifesto (words and music by David Lang)
I want to be with someone
who won’t get tired of me
who wants to be with me for who I am
who will never leave me

I want to be with someone
who is actually afraid to lose me
who values open communication
who really knows me

I want to be with someone
who cares about me, supports me, encourages me
who makes my heart jump when I hear their key in the door
who wants to be with me

who is exactly what I’ve said I always wanted
who accepts me for who I am

who I find so interesting and exciting and understands my thinking
who’s going to be healthy for the long haul
who is smarter than that, with more depth and more soul
who feels the same way
who won’t clip my wings

who laughs at my jokes
who won’t leave
who likes to have fun
who will want to be with me
who is very comfortable
who respects all the other aspects of me
who gets me
who can see a future with me
who is comfortable
who wants to work

I want to be with someone
who matches me
who teaches me
who wants to be
